Breakout Discussion: “Fear of God & Be Ready!”
As we enter the fall school season, Pastor Mike has launched a new Bible series entitled, The Fear of God. Tonight’s Q & A will only scratch the surface of a topic that is probably more critical than any subject we’ve ever discussed. As we prepare to dive in, may our hearts be open to receive what the Spirit is saying to us tonight. Let us pray.
Breakout Passage(s):
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 KJV
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. [14] For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Matthew 24:36-44 ESV
"But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. [37] For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [38] For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, [39] and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [40] Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. [41] Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. [42] Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. [43] But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. [44] Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Breakout Questions:
Consider the following scenario. A loving father leaves instructions for his youngest son to take out the trash and have the house cleaned by the time he gets back. Upon his return, he notices the trash has not been taken out. Although the son was asleep, he awakens to hear his father calling his name.
Q1A: What word or phrase would you say best describes how that son is feeling in this moment and why. (Note: Try not to repeat a word twice; Shocked, stunned, afraid, terrified, surprised, etc…)
Q1B: Now consider a similar scenario but imagine a father’s son took out the trash, cleaned the house and then went to sleep to awaken to his father also calling his name. What word or phrase would you use to describe how this son is feeling in this moment? And why?
Q2: Although many people have heard that Jesus is coming back, do you think most believers are responding to this as a matter of urgency? (Yes or No because…)
Q3: Suppose a friend confided in you that the idea of Jesus coming back frightens them because there are things they have been doing that they’re not sure God would approve of. What advice would you give them?
Prayer Point: Heavenly Father, help us maintain a holy fear and reverence for You in Jesus name.
Benediction: Jude 1:24-25
