Breakout Discussion: “Look What The Lord Has Done”

If you attended Compel City for Surprise Sunday, you were soon thrust into a Breakout Sunday where everyone from the young to the young at heart were called to gather together to grow in the word of God in a community of believers. As we endeavor to make disciples who are growing in the word and their walk with Christ, you can look forward to more Breakout Sundays coming this fall. 

Foundation Passage: Luke 18:9-14 KJV

And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: [10] Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. [11] The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. [12] I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. [13] And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. [14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

During Sundays Breakout, we read Luke 18:9-14, where Jesus shared the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector to reveal why having the right heart posture is important when we pray. For tonight’s Breakout, we will practice growing in prayer by first ensuring our hearts are right before we approach God. To do this, let’s review several scriptures to see what they reveal and how our prayer life can be strengthened. 

Breakout Scriptures: Read all the following scriptures below, then respond to the questions below. 

Romans 7:18 KJV For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Romans 7:18 ESV For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

Romans 5:8-9 NLT But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. [9] And since we have been made right in God's sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God's condemnation.

Ephesians 2:8-10 KJV For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

John 15:5 KJV I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Jude 1:24-25 KJV Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, [25] To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Q1: After reading the scriptures, what the Pharisee in Luke 18:11 is missing and how could these verses help someone like him if they were to truly open their hearts to receive understanding? 

Q2: Give an example of an “I’m better-than-others” prayer versus an “I’m broken over sin” prayer?  

Q3: How does focusing on God’s ability help prepare our hearts before we go to God in prayer?
