Breakout Discussion: “Wisdom to Overcome Offenses”

Sundays Message entitled Discerning Quiet Offense was about opening our eyes to see how the dangers of harboring offense and resentment against others can not only affect us mentally and emotionally, but it can negatively impact our walk with Jesus. As disciples endeavoring to be soul winners, tonight we focus on how we must deal with offense effectively and pray the Holy Spirit grant us the wisdom for ministering to those dealing with offense.

Proverbs 18:19

[19] A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.

Matthew 18:15-17 ESV

[15] "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.

[16] But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

[17] If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Breakout Questions:

Q1: Read Proverbs 18:19 and discuss why it is so important for us as disciples of Jesus to deal with any personal offense we may have? (harboring offense; unforgiveness; falling away; serving)

Q2: According to Proverbs 18:19, it is hard to win a person but not impossible. Discuss the hope that we have in being soul winners by obeying the command that Jesus gave us to in Matthew 15:17.

Q3: Suppose you had to speak to a group of people who were holding onto offenses. Based on the word of God, what advice would you give them?
