Breakout Discussion: “Focus on The Book, Not The Books”

As lawlessness increases in the world, and love waxes cold, many people are not only living in sin, but looking for new ways to commit sin. Although these are times of great deception, we must not become complacent and let those who normalize sin in their life to suggest that God has lowered His standard for us as followers of Christ Jesus. On Sunday, Pastor Mike’s message asked the critical question, Is Your Name In The Book of Life? Tonight, we apply our attention to the word of God to discover what God requires of us so we can know our names are in The Book of Life. But before we begin, let us pray.

Breakout Scriptures:

Revelation 20:12 KJV

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Revelation 3:1-6 NLT

"Write this letter to the angel of the church in Sardis. This is the message from the one who has the sevenfold Spirit of God and the seven stars: "I know all the things you do, and that you have a reputation for being alive-but you are dead. [2] Wake up! Strengthen what little remains, for even what is left is almost dead. I find that your actions do not meet the requirements of my God. [3] Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly. Repent and turn to me again. If you don't wake up, I will come to you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief. [4] "Yet there are some in the church in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes with evil. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. [5] All who are victorious will be clothed in white. I will never erase their names from the Book of Life, but I will announce before my Father and his angels that they are mine. [6] "Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.

Matthew 10:22 KJV

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Mark 8:34-36

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. [35] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. [36] For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Breakout Questions:

Q1: According to Revelation 20:12, what were the “books” (with an “s”) for? (Note: Be sure to read this verse carefully.)

Q2: According to Revelation 3:5-6, whose names will be in “the book” of life and what connection is there to Matthew 10:22? (Hint: Does victory have anything to do with endurance ?)

Q3: After reading Mark 8:34-36, discuss how “losing our life for Jesus and the gospel’s sake” is connected to the Book of Life.
